The Character Conundrum: Actions vs. Words
In our understanding of human behaviour, the age-old adage “actions speak louder than words” has long held sway, resonating as a universal truth. Yet, in the nuanced narratives of our lives, this dichotomy between deeds and words is more than binary. At the outset it seems reasonable to judge a character based on the coherence one has down from their thought process, to spoken or written words, finally to their actions. On exploring the complexities of human expression, there are perceptions that actions should be the final truth over and above the words. Yet, the truth is perhaps an interplay in between.
The world is seemingly a twisted, shadowy place where what you see, isn’t always what you get. So to simplify things, one believes on tangible outcomes and deeds. Actions are the breadcrumbs that lead us to the depths of an individual’s soul. They are a manifestation of how we carve out a place for our thoughts in this world. Actions are perceived as stamps of being authentic, most impactful way to display your character.
We are quick to conclude judgements about individuals based upon their actions, leaving the words to follow in the background. This reductionist perspective undoubtedly makes things simpler, but relying solely on this fails to account the various ways in which words, too serve as a manifestation of one’s evolving self.
Conversely, there are instances where words remain unspoken, and yet, the absence of language communicates volumes. In the restfulness of companionship, when words yield to shared silences, the unspoken bond between individuals can be a profound expression of character.
Character, as revealed through actions or words, is not an objective truth but a subject to interpretation. Our perceptions of individuals are often shaped by our own biases, creating another level of subjectivity while we seek to know the truth.
And what is permanence of a good character, Afterall ? why do we search for consistency in actions and hope someone performs like they done in the past ? is unreliability such a sin ? people bear storms, tread different stones and experience dynamics that changes the realms of their thoughts.
So, for the sanctity of your own mind – judge less. Identify people with their characteristics and then create a frizzy halo around them. This gives the space for them to evolve. In case they said one thing and acted different, let it be filled in the frizzy halo of understanding before you pass your judgement.
